A terrestrial herb with rosettes of long and strong, spiny-serrate, linear-lanceolateleaves 1 -1.5m long, 5-7cm broad, acuminate, green and shining on the upper surface,palet, beneath; stein erect, central, bearing at its apex a simple, dense, cone-like spike;flowers sessile, bisexual, (sterile in cultivated forms); bracteoles numerous, triangular-ovate to oblong-ovate, acute. imbricated; sepals 3. ovate, thick, fleshy, about 1cmlong and imbricate; petals 3, free, oblanceolate, about 2cm long, white below andviolet above, provided with 2 small ligules at the base; stairens 6. attached to base ofthe perianth; ovary inferior, style fihiform, 3-branched; fruit a syncarpium tormed bythe coalescence of thickened rachis, spiny-toothed bracts, abortive ovaries andadhering parts into one large globose or elongated fleshy fruit called the “pine-apple”;an eye is the sharp end of a berry composed of 6 segments, one series of 3 inside theother, the cavity underneath the segments containing the dried remains of thefunctionless stamens and style.
