It is an annual prickly herb growing up to 100cm tall. Leaves both radical and cauline,with bluish-green veins, white, spiny on margins and veins, pinnatifed, sessile.Flowers bright yellow, solitary, terminal. Capsules spinous, erect. Seeds black,numerous, globose, prominently reticulately veined. (India) A perennial glabrous herb up to 150cm tall; rhizome creeping, extensively branched,up to 3cm in diameter, pale yellowish to pinkish-brown outside, whitish, sometimesslightly pinkish inside, upper surface marked with large V-shaped leaf-scars,longitudinally furrowed, under surface with circular pitted scars of rootlets arrangedin irregular lines. Levaes erect, linier-ensiform, with obliquely acuminate apex, oftencharacteristically coorugated at one side in the upper part, with distinct midrib andnumerous thin parallel veins, glossy green but often reddish towards base, aromatic.Inflorescence arising from the rhizome, erect, with a cylindrical, straight or slightlycurved spadix up to 10cm long and produced from about the middle of an apparentleaf consisting of the compressed trigonous leaf-like peduncle and the leaf-like spatheforming a continuation of the peduncle. Flowers densely arranged on the spadix,bisexual, 3-merous; tepals 6, in 2 whorls, free, narrowly ablong, 2-3mm long;stamens 6, free, about 3mm long, with strap shaped filaments and orbicular-ellipticalanthers dehiscent by a longitudinal slit; ovary superior, subquadrangular, 2-3-celled,stigma sessile, sub conical.
