A small, evergreen tree with ash-coloured, smooth bark. Leaves oblong to ovate-lanceolate, obtuse or rounded at the 2-glanded base, acuminate, membranous,yellowish green, minutely toothed. Flowers small, unisexual; males on slenderpedicles; females larger on short thick pedicles. Fruits ovoid or oblong, 3-gonous.Seeds smooth, testa black. (India) A shrub or treelet up to 3m tall; leaves ovate, 7.5-17cm x 4-9.5cm, base broadlyrounded to attenuate, with 2 sessile to distinctly stalked glands on the margin, apexobtuse to acute, margin very shallowly serrate, lower surface subglabrous with a fewstellate hairs, basally 5-nerved, stipules caducous, subulate, 1.5-3.5mm long; inflorescence glabrous; staminate flowers: sepals subglabrous, tips bearded, petals narrowly oblong, hairy, stamens 15-20, glabrous, disk glands small; pistillate flowers: sepals villous at base, petals absent, disk obscure, annular, ovary oblong; fruit obtusely trigonous, 2-2.5cm in diameter, white, scabrid with stellate hairs. Croton tigliumis found in a wide range of vegetation and soil types, up to 1500m altitude, planted around villages. It mainly flowers from October to May in Java. Inflorescence in terminal raceme; flowers umsexual, monoecious; female flowers without petals. Capsule ovoid, obtusely 3-lobed, yellow. Seeds small with hard brownish-yellow shell (Vietnam)
