An erect or subscandent much branched shrub, up to 5m tall, stems square or 3-angled,often bearing hooked prickles, highly aromatic; leaves opposite or reraly in whorls of3, ovate to oblong-ovate, 5-8cm x 3-5.5cm, petiole 1.5-3cm long; inflorescence flat orhemispherical subcapitate; flowers with corolla tube extending to 12mm long duringanthesis, often slightly curved, orange-yellow or orange to pink, white or variegated,changing to red or scarlet; fruit a globose glossy drupe deep blue when ripe. L.camara occurs from sea-level to 1700m altitude in relatively open and disturbed, nottoo moist habitats. It is mainly a weed of plantation crops and pastures. Due to thetoxicity of leaves and seeds it is a serious threat to sheep and cattle.
