Description
A small herb up to 50(-100)cm tall, stems hirsute, usually simple; leaves broadlyelliptical to rounded or rarely ovate, (3,5-)4-6(-11)cm x (2-)2,5-5(-10)cm, baserounded to cordate, margin coarsely crenate, sparsely pubescent to hirsute; bract 1-3mm long; flowers in small false whorls of 2-4(-5), in a simple, terminal, all-sidedraceme of 5-24cm long, glandular pubescent, corolla blue or pale blue to purple-violet,9-12mm long. S. discolor is subdivided into three varieties; var. hirta Handel-Mazzetioccuring in Yunnan (China), var. cytopoda (Miq.) Adelb. Found at 1600-3200maltitude in Java, and var. discolor occuring throughout the range of S. discolor. It isfound in grassland along streams, shady and moist places in rain forest, in Irian Jayain oak forest, in Timor on limestone in Podocarpus forest, up to 2400 (-3200)maltitude. (Indonesia)
Evergreen shrub or usually singlestemmed tree up to 25(-40)m tall with an extensiveroot system, sometimes with aerial adventitious roots. Bark layered, fibrous andpapery, grey to white. Crown fairly dense and wide, somewhat silvery in appearance;smaller branches and twigs slender but not drooping, young shoots densely silky hairywith spreading fine hairs up to 2mm long. Leaves alternate, flat, silky hairy toglabrescent; petiole compressed to concave-convex, 3-7(-11)mm x 1.1-2.3mm,straight or curved; blade elliptical to lanceolate-elliptical, sometimes obliquely so, 5-10(-12)cm x 1-2.5(-6)cm, 2-10 times longer than wide, attenuated or sometimesabruptly rounded at base, apex acute or narrowly obtuse, often apiculate, thinlycoriaceous, dull green, finely but obscurely dotted with oil glands, with 5-7 prominentveins and prominent reticulation. Inflorescence a terminal or upper-axillary spike,single or 2-3 together; spike fairly densely flowered, 3.5-9cm x 2-2.5cm; rachis 1-1.3mm thick, enlarging at anthesis, densely pilose; bracts ovate, striate, villous,caducous; bracteoles absent; flowers in triads, white, greenish-white or creamy; calyxtubular, 2.5-3mm long, pubescent, tube subcylindrical, 1.2-1.9mm x 1.5-2mm, at baseadnate to ovary (persistent in fruit), with 4 trian gular to semicircular lobes 0.7-0.9mm x 1.2-2mm with thin margin; petals 5, broadly obovatespatulate with a shortclaw, 2-2.7mm x 1.8-2.3mm, blade suborbicular with 7 slender branched veins andstreaked with glands; stamens numerous, 7-10mm long, white, glabrous, arranged inbundles with a claw 1-3.5mm long; per bundle 7-10 filaments, attached to the uppermargin of the claw, free part up to 8mm long; anthers 0.4-0.55mm long; pistil with 3-celled ovary about 1mm long, style 6-9mm long and a small stigma. Fruit a cup-shaped to globose, many-seeded capsule, 3-3.5mm x 3.5-4mm, orifice 1.5-2mm indiameter with thin valves. Seed linear, minute. (Malaysia)
