Robust annual herbaceous plant, l-2m. tall. Leaves strap-shaped, disbchous : margins ciliate, wavy. Flowers unisexual, both sexes on the same plant; the male in a terminal spike, the female closely crowded in the axil of the leaves, enclosed in numerous large foliaceous bracts; style silky, elongate. The frua is a caryopsis (Vietnam)
