Erect, glabrous shrub, I .5-3m in height, containing a sticky, resinous juice; leavessimple, in whorls of 3, 10-15cm long, linear-lanceolate, coriaceous, acuminate,tapering to a short petiole, dark green and shining above, paler beneath, midrib stout,nerves numerous spreading horizontally; flowers regular, bisexual, white, red or pink,single or double, fragrant, 4-5cm in diameter, in terminal racemose cymes; calyx 5-partite, lobes 4.5mm long, lanceo , tomentose with many glands inside near the base;petals 5, fused into a funnelliform . lobes spreading twisted to the right with 5 or 6appendages to each, tube cylindric amens 5, attached to the throat of the corolla,included, filaments hairy. very short, anthers sagittate with long appendages at theapex. connivant around the stigma and adhering to it disk absent; ovary superior oftwo, free carpels with many ovules in each carpel, style filiform, stigma dilated; fruitof 1 or 2 follicles, each 1 5-23cm long and rigid seeds 1.3mm long tipped with comaof light brown hairs.
