Description
Dioecious tree, growing according to Rauh’s architectural model, 3-10 (-30)m tall,with straight trunk, usually branched near the base. Leaves distichous, oblong-lanceolate, 19-25cm x 4-10cm, base abtuse or rounded, apex acuminate or obtuse,entire, coriaceous, shiny, midribs strongly prominent below; petiole up to 1cm long.Inflorescences terminal or axillary, narrowly spicate or racemose, many-flowered, 6-20cm long; male flowers sessile, calyx cupular with 3-4 short, rounded, ciliate lobes,ca. 1mm x 2mm, stamens 3-4, reddish, oavry rudimentary on a fleshy disk; femaleflowers pedicelled, calyx cupular-campanulate, 3-4 lobed, ca. 1mm x 2mm, persistent,ovary ovoid, stigmas 3-4, disk small; in female trees often a large proportion of theflowers is perfect. Fruit a globose or ovoid drupe, 8-10mm in diameter, yellowish-redto bluish-violet, juicy. Seed ovoid-oblong, 6-8mm x 4,5-5,5mm (Indonesia)
An evergreen, slender, erect, much-branched shrub, 1-3m tall; branches cylindrical,ribbed and woody, dark brown, towards the tip green, glabrous but young shootspubescent. Leaves alternate, simple, ovate to obovate, 2.5-8cm x 1-5cm, baseattenuate, apex acute or mucronate, margins serrate, obscurely glandular on bothsurfaces, aromatic when crushed; petiole short or subsessile; stipules absent.Inflorescence consisting of many heads in a hemispherical terminal or axillarycorymb or panicle, more or less dense, 2.5-12.5cm wide; peduncles short, involucralbracts 6-7- seriate, outer ones ovate, hairy, inner ones lanceolate, shiny, ciliate at theapex, falling off together with the ripe achenes, heads narrowly cylindrical, 7mmacross. Flowers all tubular, the marginal flowers female, corolla 3.5-5mm long, 5-6-fid, the central flowers 2-6, bisexual but functionally staminate, corolla filiform, 4-6mm long, lilac or pale violet, anthers 5; ovary inferior; style-arms long, exserted.Fruit a cylindrical achene, 1mm long, glabrous with about 5 ribs, brown, achene ofcentral flowers rudimentary; pappus white, 3-4mm long, spreading.
