Description
A straggling annual or rather short-lived perennial herb, (10-)50(-80)cm tall; stemcylindrical, erect or prostrate, rooting at the lower nodes, reddish, with taproot.Leaves opposite, simple, oblong-lanceolate, 2-7cm x 1-2cm, base attenuate, apexpointed, margins entire or slightly toothed, villous; (sub) sessile; stipules absent.Inflorescence an axillary or terminal head, solitary or up to 3 together; peduncle 1-6cm long, with long, appressed white hairs, involucral bracts 5-6, 2-seriate, oblong, 5-6mm long, pointed, villous at the back, green, heads ovoid, 5mm in diameter. Ligulateflowers bisexual, numerous, 4-lobed at the apex, white; anthers 5, obtuse, with outappendage at the apex, sagittate at the base; ene, triangular or compressed with1central rib on each side, 3mm x 1,5mm, truncate at the tip, black; pappus absent, orwith 2 weak scales and a few short hairs. Seedling with epigeal germination,hypocotyl up to 8,5mm long, reddish-green, cotyledons ovate, up to 4,5mm long, basetapering, apex rounded, epicotyl short, densely hairy, first leaves opposite, ovate,margin shallowly toothed, hairy. Delicate glabrous annual; stems much-branched, 10-30cm Long, ascending to diffuse,angled; leaves in verticils of 3-5, slightly lustrous above, lanceolate to oblanceolate,1.5-3cm Long, 3-7mm Wide, obtuse to subacute, acute at base, entire, 1-nerved;inflorescence loosely flowered, the bracts delicate, membranous, the pedicels 1-4mmlong; sepals 5, elliptic, obtuse to rounded, obsoletely 1-nerved, about 1.5mm long;capsules globose, about 2mm long; seeds rather numerous, dark brown, nearlylusterless, reniform-orbicular, flat, about 0.5mm across, minutely warty. -July -Oct. Small plant, 2 - 3m. high. Bark smooth, greyish. Leaves oblong, opposite or altemate,occasionally in tuft, short-petioled. Flowers bright red at the end of branches. Fruitglobose, 5 - 8cm in diameter, crowned by persistent calyx, with yellow rind spottedwith brownish-red. Seeds numerous, covered by edible pulp (Vietnam)
